Hymnal

SILENT NIGHT

The Christmas carol “Silent Night” was originally written in German and called “Stille Nacht.” The lyrics were written in 1816 in Oberndorf, Salzburg, Austria, by a young priest, Father Joseph Mohr.

In 1818 Mohr brought the words to Franz Xaver Gruber and asked him to write music for the lyrics. The song was performed in 1818 for the Christmas Eve service at St. Nichol Parish church in Oberndorf, Austria.

SILENT NIGHT

Silent night! holy night!
All is calm all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night! holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
Jesus, Lord at thy birth

Silent night! holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born!
